Help! I Can't Breathe...
While inspecting a property in the Nashville, TN area the other day, I could not help but notice the conditon of the coils on the
package unit. While it is not unusual for condenser coils to collect a little dirt and debris in them over time, there comes a time when these coils need to be cleaned.
The outside coils in your air conditioning unit take the concentrated heat that has been collected from within your house and transfers it to the outside. This process requires the unit to move air - a lot of it! Clogged coils such as this one restrict this air movement and reduces the unit's efficiency. This wastes your hard earned money and can lead to premature failure of the unit.
Tips to remember:
- Periodically check your coils, if they are dirty, have the unit serviced by a qualified HVAC contractor.
- Keep plants and other debris at least 3 feet away from from the unit in all directions. This will allow your unit to breath better and provide access to the unit by service personnel.
- Make sure that the upward air path is also unrestricted. Most manufacturers require at least 5 feet of unrestricted air way above the unit.
- Most manufacturers recommend that the units coils be cleaned at least every 2 years.
