Trapped...
Nashville, like many metropolitan areas around the country, has an abundance of older properties on the market and it easy for unsuspecting to get caught in home buying traps. Some of them come from unscrupulous sellers or real estate agents and some get caught in
plumbing trap issues I find while doing Nashville home inspections.
While S-traps like the one pictures, are not necessarily dangerous dangerous to your health, under the right conditions these can raise a real stink though. When the sink bowl is drained, the water flooding into these older style traps can siphon the water trap joint dry. This can allow sewer gas from the municipal or septic tank system to escape into the house. It is the purpose of the trap, to form a water seal between the waste disposal system and the plumbing fixtures to keep methane gas from these disposal systems at bay. So when you are doing your initial walk-through, take a moment to look under the sinks. If you see something that looks like this, My crystal ball tells me that there is a plumber in your future...
